Need For Speed: Underground 2 is a sequel to the first Underground and is considered to feature the most customisation, the CD case indicating that there is over 70 billion possible car combinations. It has some pointless but entertaining customisation options such as Neon Bars, Hydrolics and many other features. It is the only Need for Speed game to feature SUVs such as the Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade & Lincoln Navigator.

It stays with the 'Underground' racing scene that was introduced with the first Need for Speed: Underground. Racing is still done at night, another trait from the original Underground.

You start the game on a plane coming into Bayview airport. You are given a Nissan 350Z and told to drive to a car lot. You now select your first car and you can now enter races. When you win them, you unlock a new zone, you again win all the races in the next zones and eventually challenge the last boss.

You can either do performance upgrades or visual upgrades. Visual upgrades will give you a higher star rating on your car and you will receive more money for DVD covers. You can also do magazine covers after completing certain parts of the game.

• Rachael - Samantha's best friend and the player's helper, mentor and part time agent. Rachel will call the player, via SMS Messages, throughout the game letting the player know about unlocks, upgrades, sponsorships, and racing tips. You drive her precious Nissan 350Z back to her at the start.
• Caleb - A dangerous street racer who totaled the player's car and leader of the Street Reapers. Caleb controls most of the underground racing in Bayview. His car is a custom black Pontiac GTO.
• Niki - A female Reaper who will join the player after he beats her in a URL race. She drives a custom Ford Mustang GT. It is still not known if this is the same girl in Need for Speed: Carbon.
